The Gift of Touch

To be in touch is a gift to the whole self — it offers a direct way to be in communion with what is true and alive.

One of the most distinctive qualities of Biodynamic Massage is the nature of the touch itself. We call it therapeutic touch: a way of meeting the inner self through direct communication with the body. As I have come to experience it, this quality of touch invites both therapist and client into a shared field of presence, where the body can drop into felt experience and begin to notice what is alive and moving within.

What makes touch therapeutic?

The importance of nurturing touch in human development and connection is well recognised. More recently, neuroscience has begun to explore the role of affective touch — gentle, slow stroking that activates specialised nerve fibres known as C-tactile afferents. These fibres communicate with areas of the brain involved in emotion and bodily awareness, offering further insight into how touch can shape our emotional experience and contribute to a sense of safety and connection.

Within Biodynamic Psychology, therapeutic touch can support the body's natural capacity to regulate stress and settle into states of relaxation. The different massage techniques used in Biodynamic Massage invite the nervous system towards greater balance, creating space for arousal to soften, emotional experience to be processed, and relaxation to emerge. This, in essence, is about moving through a cycle of sympathetic to parasympathetic states, which is important for building our capacity for self-regulation.

The setting, the intention, and the quality of attunement in touch are equally important. Together, they create a space in which touch can be received as attentive yet undemanding. There is no expectation to respond, perform or make anything happen. The client is free to simply receive, allowing the body to soften without pressure or expectation.

I have heard clients describe this experience as reminiscent of being an infant — of being cared for without condition, without needing to do anything in return.

To me, this is one of the core gifts of therapeutic touch and Biodynamic Massage: a space in which we can feel supported and rediscover the simple experience of resting in our bodies.
